Intro to Wheel Thrown Pottery and Raku Firing

In this course you will be introduced to the fundamentals of making pottery: tools, clay and raku glazing and firing will all be taught. No previous experience is necessary to learn and enjoy the art of Raku Pottery!

Raku pottery ware is a type of Japanese pottery, traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies that was developed in 16th century in Kyoto, Japan.  Raku pottery differs from traditional pottery in that you are able to glaze and fire pieces to completion quickly, the glazed pieces are rapidly fired and cooled. Raku pottery is quite unique and here at the Forge we offer you the opportunity to learn and create with this rare art form!
Come join this class and watch as your pots are gas fired and pulled from a red hot kiln transforming before your eyes.

This course is open to all skill levels from ages 12 to adults (Children under 16 must be enrolled together with a guardian.) This is a two session course (total 6 hrs. from 6:00 - 9:00PM each day.)  The first day you will learn how to make your wheel thrown pieces. Day two, you will learn how to glaze and raku fire your creations to completion.

All materials are provided.  Please wear clothes you don't mind getting a little muddy.
*To be successful in throwing pottery, participants must have short fingernails.  Those with long fingernails may not be able to participate fully in this class*

There must be at least 2 participants for this class to occur.  If 2 are not signed up, refunds will be initiated by the organizer no later than the Monday after the scheduled class date.

*Be advised that the second session occurs outdoors and dates may be subject to change due to unpredictable NC weather*
*All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of the class.  Parents or guardians are not permitted to leave minors at the Forge unattended*
