Interview: Maurice Hicks

Public Record: Greensboro’s Creatives is a video interview series that seeks to illuminate the lives of artists, makers, and creative people in Greensboro. Formed by Creative Greensboro, this project was developed in collaboration with the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts' Creative Catalyst Initiative.

Maurice Hicks is Greensboro-based director, screenwriter, and photographer. A New York native who was raised on Hong Kong's Shaw Brothers cinema and Jean Claude Van Damme martial arts films, Hicks graduated from UNCG's film production program and went on to write feature length screenplays and direct commercials, short films, and a feature length film.

His award winning short film, “A Letter To My Son” was screened at the RiverRun Film Festival and stars Cranston Johnson who is currently a cast member on Fox’s “Filthy Rich.” Most recently, Hicks has expanded his artistic endeavors to include photography and digital artwork.

In the interview, Hicks offers advice to creatives making work in Greensboro, discusses balancing his day job and artistic practice, and extolls the undercurrent of social justice in “Blade Runner.”
