"Binge", 2024
Aluminum, iron, steel, plaster, and spray paint
“Binge” is an encapsulation of a binge eating disorder. Pill bottles rest on a broken plate preparing to be consumed by someone struggling with binge eating disorder. The plate symbolizes the broken relationship with food, while the pill bottles are the proposed answer to fix disordered eating patterns. The sculpture is painted in gold because of the way we idolize disordered eating behaviors. Living with binge eating disorder brings feelings of shame, guilt, and isolation. The constant struggle with food can erode self-esteem and create a sense of helplessness. Despite the outward appearance of control, those suffering may feel trapped in an endless cycle of emotional turmoil. For me, when my disorder was at its worst I looked for art works that could relate to what I was going through. I found nothing, but this sculpture has helped me express what an eating disorder is from my perspective.
